Rhiw Goch, meaning Red Bank in English, is a secluded 17th century country property overlooking the Lledr valley which runs from Betws-y-Coed to Bleanau-Ffestiniog. It has several acres of stunning landscaped gardens, with secluded glades and lovely views, perfect to completely chill out and absorb nature, or to sit and meditate, or exercise. See our About Rhiw Goch page for more information and plentiful photos of the gardens and views through the seasons in this wonderful location. Rhiw Goch Cottage is a spacious, detached, comfortable and well equipped space, kept in a traditional old style.
The self-contained detached cottage provides a rustic experience where you can get back to nature whilst still being comfortable. It is very quiet, dark at night and provides a peace rarely experienced in the modern world. We have our own water supply, filtered from an upland stream. We value having very low mobile phone signals (you can get a good signal in parts of the gardens) and do not offer wifi. We have our own solar panels which provide us with a lot of the summer's daytime electricity. Snowdonia in general is designated a dark skies area, but up here away from other properties, if the lights are out, it's dark!

The Space
The Bedroom
The one bedroom has a Kingsize bed with a pocket sprung Mattress. In addition there are bunkbeds which are adult strength and size, but we'd suggest not having someone more than 12 stone (170lb, 75kg) on the top bunk. It has blackout blinds and blackout curtains for sound sleep. As well as the duvets, we provide extra blankets for cooler weather. We provide a hair dryer. We provide bedding but do not iron it.
The Kitchen
The kitchen joins the lounge to the bedroom and has plentiful cupboard space for a short stay and a double drainer sink. There are lots of pans, bowls, ovenware and utensils, glasses and mugs and the usual cutlery and crockery. There is a ceramic hob over a built in oven. The fridge has a freezer compartment. There is no microwave oven (deliberately!) Tea Towels are provided.
SALT AND PEPPER ARE PROVIDED AND THERE IS A CUPBOARD WHERE GUESTS LEAVE EXCESS FOOD WHICH OFTEN CONTAINS OIL, VINEGAR, TEA, COFFEE, STOCK POWDER ETC.
Shower Room
This is accessed from the bedroom. Electric Shower, toilet, basin, electric / central heating radiator. WE PROVIDE A BATHROOM SOAP DISPENSER BUT NO BARS OF SOAP OR SHAMPOO. There is a first aid kit.
Lounge and Dining Room
The lounge is spacious with comfortable seating for 4 people, the wood burner, a freesat TV with DVD/Bluray player. There are plenty of books, board games for rainy days. The dining room has large windows with a garden view.
Car Journeys and Parking
There is space for 1 car right outside the cottage and another just up around the barn if needed. PLEASE NOTE that getting here with a satnav will only take you to the general area and we provide specific instructions when you book. We are up a 1/2 mile steep narrow lane not accessible for caravans or large campervans.
Heating and Firewood
The Cottage is reasonably well insulated, has modern double glazing and is not draughty, so once the wood burner has been on a while, it is toasty! A wood burning stove runs the radiators and it will be laid for you ready to light when you arrive. We provide enough wood for a fire every evening of your stay. Please buy any extra wood you need from the local garages. Other than the stove there are two electric heaters.
Internet and Mobile Phones
We offer wifi at the guest's control to turn on or off to requirements and taste. Mobile phone signals are low, but adequately high in parts of the garden. Some people note that they sleep and dream better in areas of low signals as well of course for the silence, darkness and clean air.
Cyclists and Mountain Bikers
We are cyclists and others are most welcome! We can lock your bikes up overnight in the barn, although it's pretty safe up here, no one uninvited comes here unless they are lost!. The cottage itself is big enough to have some bikes inside the dining room, which has a slate floor, so as long as most of the mud has been washed off, there's no problem. There is an outside tap and hose area for washing down your bikes. We have most of the bike maintenance tools you can think of if needed.
There are tracks right from the property which go as far as Capel Curig, tracks up the other side of the valley which (somewhere!) join onto the Penmachno Trail. The Gwydir Forest (Marin) trails are 4 miles away at Betws-y-Coed. The magnificent Coed-y-Brenin trails are 40 mins drive.
The Gardens
These are a stunning feature of your stay at Rhiw Goch. There are several acres of landscaped gardens with secluded areas. You are free to wander, explore, sit or exercise in the gardens, just be careful around ponds and on slate steps, which can be slippery.
Wildlife
There is plenty of wildlife in and around the gardens. We frequently see or hear a variety of birds, including owls, thrushes, tits, skylarks, herons, cuckoos, buzzards, red kites, various finches and so on. The area is rich in varieties of butterflies and moths. We've seen newts in the ponds as well as of course frogs and toads. There is a resident and very healthy looking fox who wanders the gardens sometimes in broad daylight. For smaller mammals, we've seen the odd bat, and plentiful field mice, voles, and shrews.

Wonderful property set in truly the most beautiful gardens I’ve ever seen. Cottage is comfortable and spacious (larger than the photos show). It’s equipped with pretty much everything you could ever need. Peter is a very interesting, easy-going guy with good communication. We plan to be back!5 Stars for Accuracy, Check-in, Cleanliness, Communication, Location, Value. Amazing amenities. Sparkling clean. Thoughtful touches.

Peter’s place is certainly one of the top three Airbnb’s we’ve stayed in (out of 25 or so). It sits in a unique plot tucked-away in the hills surrounded by beautiful gardens and the occasional rocky outcrop. Entirely separate as a small bungalow cottage it is spacious and comfortable in an old-fashioned way which certainly suited my wife and I. It is better than the photos portray. The kitchen is well-equipped, the wood burner wonderful and simple to use, the shower hot: perfect to come back to after a days walking or cycling. Situated 10 minutes from Betws y Coed, it is good for the main trails and sights and paths extend from its boundary. Lastly: Peter is a kindly and capable host and neighbour, ably assisted by Kerry. We will definitely be writing another review in a few months!5 Stars for Accuracy, Check-in, Cleanliness, Communication, Location, Value. Quick responses. Amazing amenities. Outstanding hospitality.

This place is an off-grid gem! The gardens and surrounding views alone make this property really special, add in the beautiful stone cottage and wood fire and it's a perfect place to escape and de-stress. It's close to Betws-y-Coed and Zip World fforest park. Peter seems a lovely guy too! Needless to say we really recommend this property if you're planning to stay in the area.5 Stars for Accuracy, Check-in, Cleanliness, Communication, Location, Value. Thoughtful touches. Quick responses. Local tips.

We loved staying at Peter's property. With beautiful gardens and stunning views, we were away from the world while being conveniently close to Bets-y-Coed. The cottage is simple. It is very well equipped in the kitchen and we loved the log fire. Peter is a delightful host who greets you with warmth, but doesn't interfere while you stay there. He was there to say goodbye too. He also gave us warning (ahead of our booking) that there was a festival taking place locally during our visit which could impact our movements around the area. Local knowledge is so useful. We will come again Peter for quiet and comfortable stay on your gorgeous property.5 Stars for Accuracy, Check-in, Communication, Location, Value. 4 Stars for Cleanliness. Outstanding hospitality.
